7. How many hours should I take?
A good formula to follow is :

(# hours working per week) + (# hours taking * 3) < 55
In other words, the sum of the hours a student is working per week plus 3 times the # hours the student is taking in the same semester should add up to less than 55; if the sum exceeds 55, then it is generally felt that the student is creating an unnecessarily stressful situation.

8. How do I know if I need approval before trying to register for a course?
If the 5-digit unique line number for that course begins with a letter (such as A or M), approval must be obtained from the department offering the course before SAM will allow a student to register for that course. To obtain such approval, see an advisor in that department.

14. What is a "degree plan"?
A "degree plan" is a form which lists the courses a student has taken and/or has yet to take, to graduate. It is usually processed after the student has been moved into the Upper Division. Some agencies, such as the Veteran's Administration, require the student to give them a listing of all of the courses the student is required to take. This requirement is usually fulfilled by furnishing the agency with a copy of the "Degree Plan" sheet, which must be completed in advance by a CSE advisor. The prerequisite listings are available at 340 NH, and there is a separate listing for each of the catalog years 1999-2001 and 2001-2003.

After all "Lower Division" courses have been passed with a grade of 'C' or better (including CHEM 1301 (if required) and ENGL 1301, 1302), then fill out an "Undergraduate Advising Request Form" (the "gray form") and check the line

__ PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM ADMISSION (UPPER DIVISION) ______ Year of Catalog

and write in the second blank the catalog you wish to graduate under (e.g., 1997-1999, 1999-2001, 2001-2003, etc.) . Give the form to Belinda Tarrant in Room 300 NH, for processing.
