CSE Receives $1.7 million in Research Funding

CSE has received $1.7 million in research grants so far in 2005-2006. The awards include $602,284 for research on integrated cognitive systems from the Institute for the Study of Learning and Expertise, a non-profit organization that conducts research on machine learning, artificial intelligence and cognitive science. The institute is supported by the National Science Foundation, DARPA and the NASA Ames Research Center. Professor Larry Holder is the lead investigator on the two funded projects. Co-investigators on the projects are CSE faculty Dr. Michael Youngblood, Dr. Diane Cook and Dr. Manfred Huber.

Dr. Roger Walker, whose research has produced many of the instrumentation systems used by the Texas Department of Transportation to evaluate road conditions in Texas, received five research awards totaling $386,553 from TxDOT. Dr. Sharma Chakravarthy received $275,000 from the NSF to develop new applications integrating stream and event processing. Dr. Yonghe Liu is the lead investigator on a $100,000 security framework research project funded by the Texas Advanced Research Program.
