Graduate FAQs » Current Students
This FAQ answers some of the most frequently posed questions by current students to the CSE department at UTA. It address questions from both local and foreign students.
All answers provided here are only meant to clarify rules/policies described elsewhere such as the Graduate Guide (Ph.D., MS) or the UTA Graduate Catalog (look for it on Graduate School website). In the event of a conflict between an answer provided here (in this FAQ) and these two sources, the information in the sources takes precedence.

FAQs
Q1. I am graduating this semester, How do I know what paperwork to do and what the deadlines are?
At the begining of each semester a mail is sent out to your cse account answering this very question. Also a copy of this e-mail is placed on the csegrad website. The information in the mail is just a relay of the graduate school posting on the subject which can be found on http://grad.uta.edu/leftMenuPages/gradcalendar.asp
Q2. A class really Really REALLY need to get into is already full. What do I do?
The Grad Advisors along with the Associate Chair constantly monitor both enrollements and "attempts to register" for each class. This gives us an idea about the demand for a class. We understand that some of you may have refrained from attempting to register because a course is showing to be full. However, we also know (and so do you) that just because a class is showing to be full on the listing menu does not mean that the class is actually full (owing to the lag between the web interface and the backend database). Which means that if you are interested in a class it is very likely that you attempted to register in it no matter what the web listing says. We take this information into account in making decisions about adding seats/ sections etc.
Now for an answer on the more practical side - A lot of students indulge in anticipatory/speculative registeration for classes, meaning they may change their choices several times from the start of registration till the start of classes. We believe this is good (because it helps you eventually get into the class you want to be in and not just the class you can get into) but an unfortunate side effect of this behavior is that it leads to a state of indecision for some. It is our experience that students do eventually get into the classes of their choice.
An important thing to note in all this is that if you have the degree plan (program of work) worked out then you should be able to get into classes as soon as registration opens. Therefore the sooner you plan your program of work the better.
Q3. I am an International Student, what is the deal with "less than full-time enrollment"?
An international gradaute student is required to enroll in 9 credit-hours in a long semester (fall, spring) in order to fulfil the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services guidelines. Any exceptions you seek to this rule have to be approved by the International Student Office (IO). The only valid reason for seeking this exception is:
- You have finished all coursework and are left with less than 9 credit-hours (some of these are thesis-credits if you are under the thesis-option) to graduate
The procedure to seek an exception is as follows:
- Fill the "LESS THAN FULL TIME ENROLLMENT REQUEST/WAIVER APPROVAL FORM" (peach color) form, which can be obtained from the International Office. Only fill the entries for your Name, ID and Courses.
- Turn in the form to the Graduate Program Secretary to get one of the Grad Advisors to review and approve it.
- Turn in the Grad Advisor signed form to the IO for approval
