  • Biography : J. Carter M. Tiernan is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Engineering with responsibility for high school outreach and undergraduate advising. Dr. Tiernan is responsible for the Intermediate Programming course in CSE and also teaches Programming Languages, AI, and Intro to CSE. Dr. T runs the CSE High School Robot Programming Contest (RoPro) and is involved in many College of Engineering activites including the Engineering Summer Camps. She also is the advisor for the Society of Women Engineers.

    Dr. Tiernan came to UTA from nine years as administrator and mathematics specialist with Project SEED, a national mathematics education organization. In Project SEED, Dr. Tiernan taught algebra, number theory and calculus topics to elementary school students and trained numerous teachers in effective teaching methods. In the two years prior to joining SEED, Dr. Tiernan worked on robotic control projects as a faculty associate at the Automation and Robotics Research Institute (ARRI) while completing a Ph. D. at UTA in artificial intelligence. Before ARRI, Dr. Tiernan worked at Texas Instruments developing software for automated target tracking systems for tanks, expert-system based electronic "back-seaters" for fighter jets, and strike- planning systems for fighter squadrons. While at TI, Dr. Tiernan also completed an M.S. in CS from UT Dallas. Dr. Tiernan came to Texas and TI from Tennessee with a B.A. in CS from the University of Tennessee.

    Dr. Tiernan has written papers on robotic control, on control of multi-agent systems and on issues of technology in education and has taught previously at UTA and at the University of Texas at Dallas in Computer Science. Dr. Tiernan is currently interested in the research areas of multi-agent planning, artificial intelligence, computer-aided instruction, software engineering, computer curriculum at the elementary level and the societal impact of computers and technology.
